These days news are plenty of articles discussing Apple vs Android. Apple fans sticks on their positions while newly arrived Android supporters throw articles and articles about Android supremacy over stagnant IOS evolution. I have my personal opinion regarding Apple/Android. That's a recent story that will explain my feelings.
Looking at SGS3 ROM's at XDA Developers, I noticed some screenshots that caught my attention - it was Paranoid Android, and it was showing some an attractive controls to replace the standard home/back/menu buttons.
The PIE Control, in my opinion, show perfectly what people means when say that Android actually innovates. That's not just a reworked interfaced, something like getting something old and adding shiny colors and some candies - it's a completely new control system, and other than looking terribly pretty, it's also really really handy to use.
It was born in Paranoid ROM's, but noname81 gave us the possibility to install it in a list of Android devices using it's LMT Launcher - you can check the compatibility list here, in the application thread.
Now, Android openness by sure led to fragmentation, but in the other hand gave to the community the capability to develop and innovate on it, porting original ideas to the platform.
Apple has great hardware, but IOS is keeping the same, there's no innovation but revamping in their closed ecosystem. RIM did the same, and now is struggling to survive. Holding that conservative and arrogant position will not lead Apple to any benefit I think, but on the other hand, changing this behavior on them will mean refactor from scratch the whole company.
So, please, tell me you love Apple 'coz it just works out of the box and does what it is supposed to, but do not tell me anymore Apple innovates: round corners are not innovative, PIE control is.
